Walters recalls an interesting conversation

GEORGE WALTERS One More Story

A conversation I overheard many years ago:

Yes ... it is their life, but I am just saying that city folks haven’t got a clue compared to us that live in the country.

Mary: You know Laura, city folks don’t know how to live. They are so busy doing things that they don’t stop for one minute. Just rattles me to no end. All that interests them is the almighty dollar. They don’t know the true value of life. Laura: How is it, Mary, that you know all this?

Mary: How do I know all this? Well ... to be fair to your question I have personally witnessed their manners and such, at the general store in town.

Laura: Everyone lives their own life Mary, you should know that. Mary: Well ... I would have thought you of all people, Laura, would be a little more supportive. I even overheard one lady saying that she and her husband are travelling, enjoying each other’s company.

Laura: So what is wrong with that, Mary?

Mary: What’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with that is they worked all their life, and now they are wasting their money on crazy notions, and I might add, by the way that woman dresses, I could only imagine, what her notions are. And the way she looked at her husband with that twinkle in her eyes. My goodness!

Laura: I kind of have to agree with the lady, Mary. They both worked hard all their life, and now they want to enjoy it. There is nothing wrong with that from what I see. Mary: Yes ... it is their life, but

I am just saying that city folks haven’t got a clue compared to us that live in the country.”

Laura: So what would you call living, Mary?

Mary: You of all people should know that, Laura. All country folks really want is to have food on the table and a nice home. A home far enough away so people don’t know their business, but close enough that they can get to town occasionally.

Laura: So from what I understand, you like the country, but you enjoy going to the city once a week, dining at their best restaurants, going to their theatres, along with taking in the sights. And didn’t I hear you say last week that you and Bill were planning on taking a trip to Italy, and on to Paris, as you were just dying to buy some of their clothes?

Mary: Well ... yes, but that’s different. Anyways, I have to be off. I told Mandy that I will drop by for a cup of tea. And just between you and me Laura, I think Mandy really believes that life is something which can be put into a mould, and made into whatever she wants. Thank goodness we aren’t like that! I will drop by next week.
