An outing to remember

There have been many things over the years that have struck my interest. Some I enjoyed doing and ... some I didn’t.

Thinking about that, there was one thing that kind of stands out a bit above the rest. To explain it better I have to take a step back in time. It was a time when a young scraggly boy was trying to make sense, out of a world that didn’t make ... any sense at all. At least at that time in my life.

While on the subject of life. I would have to say that there has never been a day throughout my life, that something unusual didn’t come along. It seems that every day is like a mystery novel, you never know what the next page might bring.

Anyways, it was a beautiful summer day. The work around the farm had slowed down some, and Laura the lady of the house decided that she would like to pick some blueberries. They had just started to ripen, at a place that she found many years ago.

She had kept the location a secret, as she knew darn well that if others knew about it, they would clean them up leaving nothing for us.

With that in mind, she packed up a small lunch, enough for two people and asked if I would like to go along. Now if there was one thing I enjoyed, it was being alone with Laura, as she always had lots to talk about. “I sure would,” I said. “Well then, fetch them two pails sitting on the front porch, and I will bring our lunch.”

With pails in hand we headed up the old dirt road to where the blueberries were located. It wasn’t all that far, and within a half hour we arrived.

Looking around, Laura then pointed to an area high up on the rocks, and there in front of my eyes were hundreds of small bushes loaded with blueberries. They were so thick that it didn’t take us any time at all to fill our pails.

“There sure are a lot of them this year,” she said.

“Yep.” I replied. “And they sure taste good too.”

“I can tell,” Laura said, “by the looks of your face.”

“What?” Oh! Yea,” and proceeded to wipe my mouth on my sleeve.”

“Not your sleeve, oh ... nother mine. Let’s have lunch.”

With that we picked out a nice rock under a shade tree and sat down. Laura took out our lunch from the bag, and we both sat there enjoying the cool breeze, watching the birds and the small critters that were scampering around us … while chatting away.

Things couldn’t get better than this I thought, and took another bite of my sandwich. After we finished I gathered the two pails of berries, and we headed back home.

“Them there blueberries are sure going to make some tasty pies,” I said.

Laura looked at me and said. “Is food all you ever think of ?”

“Yep,” I replied, “especially your pies and cookies.”

She laughed and said. “Kids, you gotta love ‘em.”

In closing I would like to wish you well.
